Coimbra, Aveiro

Welcome to Coimbra - the intellectual centre of Portugal.

Stop the blog!

Fire... Fire... Fire!

OK... all clear now.... time for a cake.

Phew... We were within maybe 10Km of that fire.

Better say thanks for our survival.

Oh those blue tiles... Can't get enough of them.

Here's a closeup of the scene where a member of the congregation gets into trouble for not wearing his cross correctly - notice everyone has their heads tilted and their expressions are quite sad - even the angels are sad.

Anyway, the poor guy now has a much bigger cross to bear!

And Mary is aghast.

She's always sad isn't she?

Here's a sculpture of someone else with a huge cross to bear.

Anyway, we said thanks for our survival of the fire and moved on into the university.

Here's a room with paintings of various kings.

And outside that room is a walkway with a great view of Coimbra.

This university has Europe's best Baroque library that has been in operation since the 18th century and contains books from before 1755.

This photo is just to whet your appetite - but we weren't allowed to take photos in the main areas of the library.  Shame really because it was quite spectacular in the room, the tables, the way the books are stored.  I didn't feel comfortable "stealing" a photo - they had people guarding things too.

Coimbra was a nice city, and as you can see below, they have trees and a river (Mondego).

And here's something I haven't seen before - It looks like they play a game of water polo but in kayaks.  If you look carefully, you'll see the ball having been thrown from one group of players to the other.

Our hotel was great.  They even had a 9-hole "pitch and putt" golf course on the grounds.

Ruth had us very busy touring the sights in Coimbra, so no golf for me.

Next stop was Aveiro - The "Venice" of Portugal with its canals.

A bit touristy really, but it was a nice reprieve from churches, castles, cathedrals, monasteries, and sad sculptures.

Quite scenic, and very relaxing sitting in the gondola baking in the sun,

Next stop... Porto.
