Lisbon environs

Portuguese tarts are a real hit.

They're available everywhere, and I think we haven't had a day without having at least one.

So we just had to go visit the the place that invented them... Pateis de Belem.

Guess what - we weren't the only people who had that idea - here we are queuing for just 4 of the 400 seats available in this place.

It didn't take too long for our tarts to be delivered... here's a snap as I walked past the kitchen:

They don't just make tarts - Michael ordered a Duck pie to go with his six Portuguese tarts:

Outside the Pateis de Belem, they were celebrating the Josem's coming to town with a pageant. Marching band and all.  Here's a snap of the horsemen saluting at our presence.

I was impressed that behind the last horse came a very important vehicle cleaning up the horse manure.  Here's the truck about to do its business in cleaning up the business of those impressive looking horses.  Clearly those gee gees are fed well - there was a very long trail of manure.

On the water front a magnificent monument celebrates the Portuguese penchant for exploration.

And here, in front of the monument, is Ruth stepping up to have a stern word with Michael, who is taking it with a stiff upper back.

Here's a close-up of Ruth and Michael trying to figure out what those guys in the monument are looking at.

It wasn't too hard to work out really... there's a Rio de Janeiro like Christ overlooking the Golden Gate bridge:

The carvings are quite grand - I like how the religious bloke is at the back pushing for others to do the adventuring.

After that hard work of looking at the view, Ruth Michael, and Zoe needed a drink with a view:

And after a drink, well, time for a meal.  We took a ferry across to the other side of the river, and then a taxi to a recommended restaurant (thanks Wendy Luke) called Ponto Final.  This was a superb recommendation - a gorgeous setting and great food.  Here's my plate of sardines:

Here's the view from our table - a passing cruise ship - you can see the Lisbon castle in the distance:

Ruth and I ensured we wore matching outfits for lunch, and Michael made sure we had a table that matched his tee.

But my pic of the day was the perfect pic to finish off today's blog.  Lunch finished close to sunset, and in the shadows... well... there we are together with Lisboa in the background.

A short ferry ride back to Lisbon, and we had to farewell Michael and Zoe - they're off back to London and Isl of Man.

Back at the hotel, I was good for nothing, much to my bride's disappointment.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz
